Paris is set to introduce cuts to traffic when pollution levels spike, after the ecology minister conceded to a long-running disagreement with the mayor of Paris.
For a few hours this week Paris became the most polluted city in the world, according to one particular ranking. The city's mayor has responded by calling for free public transport and driving restrictions to be put in place on Friday.
Air quality in Paris reached its worst level in six years, this week. Rare “very high level” fine particle pollution triggered an alert on Wednesday and Thursday, and the French capital was blanketed in smog, as shown in the time-lapse video below.
