What is The Local?

Whether you are an international resident in France, trying to understand the culture and customs of your new home so that you can feel more at home, or an admirer of France from afar, looking to improve your language skills for the next time you visit, we are here to help.

With a membership to The Local France, you will receive unlimited access to all of the coverage we produce – from the latest breaking news stories, to the cultural explainers and language guides that will help you to navigate France like a local.

The Local exists to make France available to all – from those who live in the country but are still getting to know the culture, to those whose passion for French culture is their main hobby.

Who are we?

We are a team of internationals ourselves, who started in 2004 with an email newsletter and a desire to translate the news into a language we could understand. We know the ups and downs of international life and have funnelled all of these lessons and experiences into countless how-to guides and explainer articles, all designed to make your life easier.

We are award-winning journalists, who don’t settle for just making the news accessible to English-speaking internationals. Having a team of journalists spread over nine European countries, there are a lot of viewpoints to draw from, and we think this makes for articles with a perspective completely unique from anything else you’ll find..

What our members mean to us

We are purposefully connected with our members and use your questions and requests to inform what we write about. We connect with our readers on a regular basis through our editorial newsletters and social media, and encourage readers to email us directly with their questions, concerns and comments on international life.

We exist to serve you, our international resident and abroad aficionado community.
