Staff at a job centre in south-western France have received a particularly cheeky piece of mail from one welfare beneficiary. The man sent them a postcard from Morocco, thanking them for paying for his trip.

A man who had been receiving welfare benefits from a job centre in the town of Cognac, south-western France, has taken the time to acknowledge the agency’s staff for their kindness.

In a postcard sent from Morocco, the man thanked the job centre staff for financing his trip, and invited them to take him off their list of welfare recipients.

“It’s a bit of an unusual way to let us know he was away,” Valérie Daunas, director of the Cognac ‘Pôle emploi’, or job centre, told regional daily Sud-ouest on Thursday.

In France, jobseekers are entitled to 35 days per year when they don’t have to check in at their local employment office, in order to continue receiving benefits from the state.

When welfare recipients do take a leave of absence, said Daunas, “they normally just send us a letter or email.”
