1.Size matters. Paris apartments are notoriously short on space, but you should still be able to swing your arms around without touching the walls. Remember it is illegal in France for landlords to rent out apartments with less than nine square metres of "habitable space", but many continue to flout the law. So take a measuring tape with you on your flat hunt and don't be afraid to report him or her to the Town Hall or a housing charity like Fondation Abbé Pierre.
