France is not short of Unesco World Heritage sites but some are must-see more than others thanks to the threat that they will disappear under the sea if global warming continues. If the current warming trend continues and temperatures rise to 3°C above pre-industrial levels over the next 2,000 years —a likely scenario-136 sites would be impacted acoss the globe, researchers say. The Unesco sites may be protected against development or destruction, but not against rising sea levels. The authors of a study say if nothing is done it could be “disastrous”. Rising sea levels will soon reduce the number of World Heritage sites in France by five. Some of the most stunning and historic sites in the country could soon be lost to the sea if global warming continues.
