The English usage of the word is not entirely different to the French. 'Sect' can be used in a derogatory way to describe religious or political groups, especially in the adjectival form 'sectarian'. This implies a group whose members have a narrow-minded devotion to specific religious or political beliefs, often leading to prejudice, discrimination, or violence against other groups. The UK Left (outside the Labour. Party -mostly) has a very specific problem with sectarianism, as can be seen from the recent history of Your Party and the many Trotskyist groupuscles.
