Hundreds of people were evacuated on Wednesday morning as a fire ripped through one of the French capital's most famous hotels, situated close to the president's Elysée Palace.

French emergency services said that around 400 people were evacuated after fire broke out in the 5-star Hotel Bristol on Wednesday morning.

Early reports suggest that one person has been injured in the fire, which started in the kitchens of the hotel on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré - close to both the presidential palace and the British and American embassies.

Fire crews declared the fire under control at around 11.30am, but are still on site along with the mayor of the 8th arrondissement and the Paris police chief.

Police cordons are in place and people are advised to avoid the immediate area.

Only the hotel itself was evacuated.
