The Talking France podcast returns with all the latest from the farmer protests, French government information on civics tests and cartes de séjour - plus a roundup of the best and worst bits of 2025 in France.

Host Ben McPartland is joined by The Local France's Emma Pearson and John Lichfield to talk about all the latest news from France - plus a look back at the wild ride that was France in 2025.

Starting with farmer protests - roadblocks and blockades are being put up across the country as anger in the farming community spills over. We discuss what the protests are about, how the government is reacting and the chances of this becoming a more generalised protest.

The French parliament has passed a bill making renewal of the carte de séjour residency card easier - unfortunately this is unlikely to become law, but the reasoning behind the bill will make a whole lot of sense to foreigners in France dealing with long préfecture waits and IT glitches.

On a related note, the French government has also published details of the written civics test that, from January, will be required for certain types of residency card and for citizenship. The team explains the practicalities and has a go at passing some test questions.

And finally, Emma, John and Ben look back at 2025 and picking their personal highlights and lowlights of the year, plus a few selections for French Word of the Year.

This is the final Talking France of 2025, but next week we will have a special episode looking ahead to 2026, before the podcast returns in January.
