Nearly quarter-of-a-century after it left the British high street, multinational clothing retailer C&A is slashing the number of stores it operates in France, putting more than 300 jobs at risk.

Ready-to-wear chain C&A plans to close 24 of its 100 stores, in France, and reduce its 1500-strong workforce by a fifth to ‘improve competitiveness’.

This restructuring is intended to “secure the brand's future in a French clothing market that continues to deteriorate and in which C&A France is experiencing difficulties despite previous adjustments”, according to a statement.

The company announced the plan to its employees at a central social and economic committee meeting on March 14th. It said a maximum of 324 jobs were at risk.

The 24 C&A stores earmarked for closure are experiencing “structural difficulties”, while 57 of the brands ‘corners’ in stores such as Intermarché, Carrefour and Auchan are also at risk, as the restructuring means that partnerships will not be renewed.
