The seven were arrested on Tuesday night in the French capital after an attack on a French gendarme outside the Israeli Embassy, near the Champs Elysée.

According to police, on Monday at around 7pm a dark coloured BMW with "three to four people" inside, followed by a Mercedes, veered off the road and drove at the police officer who was on duty in front of the Embassy.

The officer managed to avoid the cars and was not injured, but the suspects escaped.

They were arrested on Tuesday evening.

An investigation was been opened into "attempted intentional homicide of a person in public authority" by the Paris police.

French media reported that the four men and three women are British nationals of Pakistani origin.
