The Local is a site about France, staffed by non-French writers. That means that we have all, at various points, made the move to France so we know that while this is a very exciting thing to do it can also be stressful, complicated and baffling.

That's why we have created our new Moving to France guide, which gives you an insight into all stages of the process, from house-hunting to registering yourself within the French system and making friends with your neighbours.

We look at the pre-move admin such as arranging visas for certain nationalities and offering tips on how to navigate the property market to buy or rent your dream home.

Once you're here there's a lot of that famous French paperwork to do, so we've covered the practicalities of residency, driving and the French health and education systems.

There's also the chance to benefit from the experiences of others. The Local has a large community of readers who have been through the process of moving and are always happy to share their experience, from the practical details to the culture shocks you should prepare yourself for.

And for those people who also need to learn French, we have a whole section on learning French the way the locals speak it

Bon courage!
