Four people were taken to hospital with burns after the blast, which happened around 9.45am on Friday morning outside a Carrefour supermarket in Mezieres-sur-Seine in the Yvelines département northwest of Paris, according to police.

Some 30 people were less severely injured in the blast, which spread debris up to 20 metres from the site, police said.

The circumstances have not been made clear but the suspect fled the scene and is the subject of a police hunt.

The explosion did not succeed in opening the ATM.
