After weeks of sunny weather France was hit by violent thunderstorms this week.
On Thursday morning five départments in the south east of the country – Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Alpes-Maritimes, Bouches-du-Rhône, Var and Vaucluse were placed on orange alert for storms.
National forecaster Méteo France told the public to expect rain, high winds and even hail showers.
These storms, along with strong winds and occasional hail showers could provoke flooding in local areas, said Météo France.
Members of the public are advised to avoid travelling and take shelter during the storms. They are also advised not to venture near the edge of waterways or the coast.
The weather warnings come a day after the Paris region was hit by storms which brought torrential rain and hail, leading to some streets being flooded.
Images of the extreme weather were captured and posted on social media.
