France reports 437 new coronavirus fatalities as total death toll passes 23,000

France on Monday reported 437 new deaths from COVID-19 in hospitals and nursing homes over the last 24 hours, raising the total death toll to 23,293.

The number was an increase from from the previous days, the health ministry said in a statement. 

On Sunday, 242 people were confirmed to have died from the virus. The number included 152 hospital deaths, which was the lowest number reported in five weeks. However throughout the epidemic weekend tallies have tended to be underreported.

In total, France has registered 14,497 hospital death and 8,796 deaths in medical nursing homes (known as Ehpad) since the beginning of the epidemic.

The number of coronavirus patients in intensive care in France fell by 74 to 4,608 while the numbers in hospital fell by 162 patients to 28,055, the ministry said.

The latest figures were released as Prime Minister Edouard Philippe is due on Tuesday to reveal how France is to emerge from its anti-virus lockdown on May 11th.

Schools are expected to gradually reopen on that date but cafes and restaurants will stay shut for now.

Out of the 88,712 people hospitalised in France since the beginning of the epidemic, 45,513 have recovered and returned home.
