Celebrity couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie got married in secret in France at the weekend in a low key ceremony at their château. It was in stark contrast to Kanye West's and Kim Kardashian's pre-nuptial celebrations in Paris earlier this year.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt married on Saturday in Château Miraval, in the Var department of southern France, a spokesman for the couple has revealed.

Jolie and Pitt tied the Knott in a small chapel during a private ceremony attended by family and friends, according to People magazine. In advance of the nondenominational civil ceremony, Pitt and Jolie also obtained a marriage license from a local California judge. The judge also conducted the ceremony in France.

The couple’s children took part in the wedding. Jolie walked the aisle with her eldest sons Maddox,13 and Pax, 11. Zahara, 9 and Vivienne, 6 threw petals. Shiloh, 8 and Knox, 6 served as ring bearers, the spokesman says.

Of her life with Pitt and children, Jolie told People in May: "We've been through so much, we've gotten a lot closer, which I think naturally happens with raising a family together."

"You have this person you live with who really knows you, and you know them so well. You're not lovers or boyfriend and girlfriend as much as you are a family," she added.

Jolie and Pitt acquired the 500-hectare (1,200-acre) Chateau Miraval estate in 2008 for around 40 million euros ($52 million) and have used it as a summer residence.

The estate includes 50 to 60 acres of vines.

In March last year The Local reported how Pitt and Jolie's dip into the wine trade got off to a roaring start when the first 6,000 bottles of their French Miraval rose wine sold out within hours of going on general sale.

The couple are the latest in a long list of stars who have invested in wine, from ex-Formula One champion Michael Schumacher, singer Sting and footballer David Beckham to actor Gerard Depardieu, filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola and singer Madonna.

Marc Perrin of the family that partnered with Jolie-Pitt said in February, 2013 that the couple were involved in the production process and wanted to do more than "just put their name" on the label.

"They want to be proud of the wine on their property. They are really looking for excellence," he said, adding that the estate would later look to also produce red and white wines.

Initial rumours suggested Pitt and Jolie were due to get married on May 25th this year, the same day as Kanye West and Kim Kardashian. Perhaps the media circus that followed the Kardashians around Paris in the run-up to their wedding, persuaded Brangelina to postpone their own nuptials.
