A campaign from French tourist officials is urging typically prudish Brits to come to France for its "naturist environments".

French tourist chiefs at Atout France are inviting Brits to enjoy the many naturist haunts of France.

Its website has a whole section dedicated to "Feeling Free", complete with a guide to the best spots for getting your kit off and enjoying the sun.

"For the naturist, France offers the chance to enjoy a free lifestyle in any environment you wish," the website reads.

"By the sea, in the country, under canvas or staying in accommodation, you’ll have the freedom to choose just how you want to spend your holiday."

Anne Pedersen, the campaign's spokeswoman, said that while the idea of naturism in France was nothing new, not all Brits took it into account when weighing up where to take their summer holidays.

"People are seeing a new side of France - everyone knows about the wine, the gastronomy, the winter skiing, the city breaks, but this is a bit more unusual," she told The Local.

"It's not often you hear a friend say 'I'm going to a nudist beach for my next holiday'. The whole idea is still a bit peculiar."

She said that while she didn't have the exact figures, naturist holidays were very popular with Brits, not least because they lack nudist options on their home soil.

"But other countries cater for it much more. There is a big market in Germany for example, and France even has dedicated resorts!"

The campaign's website features a long list of resorts, bed and breakfasts, and campsites (together with many pictures), showing exactly what a scantily clad tourist can expect.

These locations are given rankings, and also rated on how family friendly they are

The website even offers a test to "find out whether naturism is in your nature", a naturist app, a map of all the naturist spots in France, and a section offering "all you want to know about naturism".

For example, did you know the first naturist resort in Europe opened in France in 1950, in Gironde?

France now boasts a full 460 spaces totally dedicated to naturists, most of which are camps or colonies. There are also 73 naturist beaches, 35 bed and breakfasts, and 24 nudist swimming pools.

But a word of warning - if you're planning to head to France for a naturist jaunt, be sure to read these golden rules first.
