In all, 15 départements were placed on Orange alert – the second highest level of warning – which included most of Normandy in north of the country as well as parts of the south.

On Sunday warnings for snow and ice were issued for Orne, Manche, Ille-et-Vilaine, Indre-et-Loire, Maine-et-Loire, Mayenne, Sarthe, Corrèze, Cantal and Aveyron.

By Monday Aude, Herault, Allier, Cher, and Indre had been added to the list.

Although the snow forecast is not expected to be heavy Méteo France warns that it will nevertheless make driving conditions hazardous.

School transport has been suspended in parts of Normandy.

The weather warning will remain in place until Tuesday morning after which temperatures are set to rise.
