The 150th anniversary is marked with a series of commemorative events which will celebrate a business that has grown from a humble draper’s shop opened in 1864, to the £4 billion (€4.8bn) international, award-winning business it is today.
Lifting the lid on its history, John Lewis will invite the world to explore its rich and unique heritage and understand how this iconic British brand has grown out of one man’s idea of "a better way of doing business."
Collaborating with some of Britain’s most loved brands and designers, John Lewis will offer in store and online a carefully edited assortment of product that has been produced exclusively for the anniversary.
Partnerships include: Antoni & Alison; Jaeger; Ted Baker; Lucienne Day; Barbour; Alex Monroe; Jo Malone; Liz Earle; Dualit; Vitra; Alessi; Links of London and Silvercross. In a series of firsts, its fashion department sees the launch of Orla Kiely’s first menswear range, exclusive to John Lewis.

The flagship store in London received a multi-million pound revamp and launched the much anticipated exclusive fashion label Somerset by Alice Temperley.
The secret for John Lewis’s success is apparent to its customers – the service, which has been at the heart of the business. John Lewis is one of the few companies to have its own written constitution. More uniquely the department store is owned by its staff, known as Partners.
John Lewis is famous for its wide range of womenswear stocking a mixture of own brands such as Kin by John Lewis, John Lewis and well known British labels like Whistles, Reiss, LK. Bennett and Hobbs. Ted Baker, John Lewis & Co and Gant are some of the staple brands available to the male customer base of the department store group.
It’s not a surprise that John Lewis was voted Britain’s most trusted brand in 2013 by customer experience analysts Nunwood.
“Unquestionably, there is a bit of an aura around John Lewis...customers have a feeling that the staff try that bit harder and make an extra effort, so they view it as a brand that they can trust,” Nunwood director David Conway told a British newspaper after John Lewis claimed the accolade.
The awards have kept coming for John Lewis. In April 2014 they cleaned up at the Verdict Customer Satisfaction Awards where they retained the title of Britain's best retailer, in addition to being recognised as the best overall online retailer.
John Lewis has been at the forefront of British life for well over a century. A company, later owned by John Lewis, designed an exclusive fabric which was used in one of the Titanic’s state rooms. It's flagship Oxford Street store received a Royal Warrant for supplying goods and services to the Queen.
At present John Lewis has 41 stores in the UK. John Lewis also sells online, since 2001 when John Lewis.com went live, and has been invested in heavily by the department store to make the virtual shopping experience more enjoyable, and crucially, safe for the customer.
Britons have long been shopping online at John Lewis.com but now customers abroad can avail of the vast range of range of items (from clothes to toys and sport & leisure) with just a click of a mouse. John Lewis currently ships to 33 countries, including France as well Germany, Italy, Spain and Sweden.
