Two foreign UN employees, one French and one British, were killed at a central Somali airport of Galkayo by a man wearing a police uniform, several sources told the AFP.

"The two men were shot inside the airport as they disembarked from a plane. The reason for the attack is not clear ," said a Somali security official Mohamed Mire.

Both victims were international staff of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), said a source at the UNODC. According to this source, neither the details of the attack, nor the identities of the victims were immediately known.

A Somali security source at the airport in Galkayo who requested anonymity said that the shooter was wearing a police uniform and seemed "mentally unbalanced," adding that he was arrested. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Galkayo straddles the border between the self-proclaimed autonomous regions of Puntland and Galmudug in Somalia, which has been without an effective government and in a state of civil war for 20 years. The situation has led to the emergence of numerous militias, Islamist insurgents and pirate groups that exist in the country's the territory.
