A French court may have set a legal precedent this week when it decided that a frozen chicken constituted a weapon. A judge sentenced a man to a year in prison for swinging the poultry at his ex-partner.

The verdict came down on Thursday for a 35-year-old French man: two years behind bars, with one year suspended, for a poultry assault in the eastern French town of Luxeuil-les-Bains, France TV reported.

If the punishment seems harsh it was because judges ruled the frozen bird constituted a "weapon."

It started when the defendant turned up at his 46-year-old ex’s home, while they were both drunk, and got into an argument with her for reasons police didn’t explain.

During the dispute the man snatched the frozen bird from the woman’s fridge and bashed her with it, police said. He also scratched her and threatened to kill her.

During his rage the man allegedly smashed up part of her flat as well.

It wasn’t the first time the man had been accused of attacking the woman. He was convicted twice of domestic violence against her and was subject to a restraining order.

Due to her injuries the woman was signed off work for 10 days.
