A dog owner appeared before a court in a Paris suburb this week for hanging his pet pedigree "Pollux" in his garage. The man said he killed the dog "in a panic" after it bit his daughter.

The dog owner, identified as Renald, hung his three-year-old pet dog Pollux, of the Tibetan Lhassa Apso breed, from a beam in his garage in, just two weeks after he bought the dog.

When questioned by police, the man defended his actions saying: “It bit my daughter and I panicked.” He told officers that his 2-year-old daughter had to have five stitches as a result of the bite.

However Le Parisien newspaper quoted a source close to the case who contradicted Renald's version saying the wound was “not very serious” at all.

The hanging, which took palce in July 2010 resulted in the 25-year-old man being initially sentenced to five months in prison in December 2011.

He was also slapped with a €1000 fine payable to the Brigitte-Bardot Foundation, a charity set up by the actress to raise awareness of cruelty to animals and rescue any in need.

However Renald had appealed the sentence but on Tuesday this week a court in the Paris suburb of Corbeil-Essonnes upheld the punishment.
