Marion Bartoli announces shock retirement
Wimbledon winner and France’s no.1 female tennis player Marion Bartoli made a shock retirement announcement on Wednesday, shortly after losing in the second round of the Cincinnati Masters to Romania's Simona Halep.
The Frenchwoman, who won Wimbledon just seven weeks ago and ranked seventh in the world, dropped the bombshell after the 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 loss.
The announcement comes two weeks before she was due to compete in the US Open on August 26th.
“I’ve had a lot of injuries since the beginning of the year. I’ve been in the game for so long, and I really forced myself and gave it my all at Wimbledon,” she said at a press conference.
“I feel felt like I had lost all the remaining energy in my body. I achieved my dream and that will stay with me forever, but now my body can’t take it anymore.”
