A woman in the French city of Reims, north east of Paris, faced police questioning on Tuesday after attempting to hand over a sports bag containing her mother’s body to staff at a funeral parlour.

The 40-year-old woman claimed that she had discovered her mother’s lifeless body in her back garden days earlier.

Despite the heat and humidity over this last week, she had failed to alert emergency services, telling police she had been in a state of shock.

Following the discovery, the woman then took her mother's body inside the house, leaving it there for several days, French daily L’Union reported.

On Tuesday morning the woman placed the body in a sports bag which she then transported to a funeral parlour with the aid of a wheelchair.

Needless to say, her appearance at the funeral parlour shocked staff who then alerted police.

The woman, who has not been named was then questioned by police.

Police have also ordered an autopsy to rule out any criminal involvement in the death.
