A 12-year-old British boy who disappeared while riding his bike in gale-force winds on a French island was found dead underwater on Thursday, local prosecutors said.

"The body corresponds to the young boy who disappeared Saturday," said Toulon prosecutor Xavier Tarabeux, referring to Pierre Barnes.

He told AFP that boaters had alerted authorities after they spotted the body by the small Mediterranean tourist island of Porquerolles not far from the creek where Barnes's bicycle and shoe had been discovered.

The boy had just arrived on the island with his English father, French mother and three siblings when he went out on his bike as winds barrelled at 130 kilometres (80 miles) an hour.

An autopsy would take place in short order, Tarabeux said.
