Police have said they are treating the death of a six-year-old girl found in a well in south eastern France as accidental.

The girl was found at the bottom of a six-meter deep well in Colle-sur-Loup in the Alpes Maritimes region on Sunday evening.

“We’re currently working on the hypothesis of an accidental death, which we think is 99% possible,” said local police.

Before the death is officially declared as accidental, police are waiting for the results of an autopsy.

The well was reportedly partially filled with water and covered with a wooden plank for protection when the girl was found.
