Hollande: eurogroup must be strengthened

French President François Hollande called on Monday for strengthening the role of the eurogroup of finance ministers and more frequent summits of leaders to tackle the eurozone debt crisis.

"I am proposing that the role of the eurogroup and its president be strengthened," Hollande told a gathering of French diplomats.

He said summits of eurozone leaders should be held "much more regularly" and "not only twice a year" to discuss eurozone economic policy.

He said the eurozone needed to implement the "necessary instruments of solidarity" to obtain "the pooling of debts" in the economic area.

He reiterated France's desire to see Greece remain in the eurozone, saying Athens "must take credible steps" to tackle its debt and that other Europeans "must understand" the efforts Greece is making.
