A Christian French man living in Morocco has been buried in a Muslim cemetery after the body was mistaken for a relative by another family.

Emile Capdeville, who died at 78 earlier this month, was confused with another man who was apparently living in the same room as him and had died the same day.

The mistake was only noticed three days after the funeral, when Emile’s family came for his body, only to discover it was not him.

Local police have given permission for the body to be exhumed.

A source told newsagency AFP: “The French expat had a Muslim funeral, verses from the Koran were read, the prayers took place in a mosque and the body was buried in a Muslim cemetery.”
