The wife of former president Jacques Chirac was being driven by her chauffeur who could not brake in time avoid the deer crossing the motorway at about 10pm.

The car was seriously damaged but neither Mrs Chirac nor the chauffeur was hurt. The wellbeing of the animal is unknown.

The 75 year old had just left the family chateau in the region and was heading towards Paris.

Once the police were alerted, they sent another car at about 11.30pm for her to be sent home.
