A man committed suicide by jumping off the Eiffel Tower after climbing up part of the monument.

On Sunday evening, French police spotted a man climbing up the Eiffel Tower. The authorities immediately evacuated the monument and sent in rescuers, French daily Le Parisien reports.

Firemen belonging to a group of elite climbers, the GREP, tried to approach the man who was situated between the second and third storey.

The firemen succeeded in climbing up the side of the tower. But when they approached the man, he threatened to commit suicide in English.

The officers were unable to reason with him. He jumped and died hitting the second storey of the Eiffel Tower.
