In a statement, Harper said he and Hollande will discuss a range of issues during their talks in Paris, including "strengthening trade and investment relations, including through a Canada-European Union Free Trade Agreement."

They are also expected to "reaffirm the deep and enduring historical, cultural, linguistic and educational ties between the two countries."

The government said bilateral trade with France amounted to CAN$8.6 billion (US$8.3 billion) in 2011, with Canadian exports totaling almost $3.1 billion while imports added up to $5.5 billion.

Harper, who met Hollande during last month's Group of Eight summit near Washington, was in London for Queen Elizabeth II's diamond jubilee celebration.
