Hundreds of people invaded an unoccupied villa in the south of France in a party which resembled that from the film "Project X".

News magazine Le Nouvel Observateur reported on its website that several hundred people attended the party in the house close to the southern resort of Sainte-Maxime.

Police were called to the party by neighbours who heard the noise.

Revellers were invited to the party through social networks and police are trying to identify the organisers.

In the film "Project X" a group of teenagers end up hosting a party for hundreds of people after publicising it on social networks.

Similar incidents have happened around the world, including one in the French town of Clermont-Ferrand where several thousand people invited themselves to a schoolboy's party.

A party in Houston, Texas, led to the death of one partygoer after fights broke out.

Police said the owner of the villa was currently being tracked down.
