Fake kidnapping gets stag party in trouble

An apparent violent city centre kidnapping by a group of men on a stag party caused police to be mobilized in the southern Bouches-du-Rhône region at the weekend.

The stunt took place on Saturday in central Marseille when a motorist witnessed the kidnapping of a victim covered in blood, according to AFP. He was handcuffed and pushed unceremoniously into a van that started with a bang.

The shocked witness managed to take down the registration details of the van and pass them on to police who then alerted colleagues across the region to look for the vehicle.

Significant resources were deployed to hunt down the van and its bloody occupant. All were found later on Saturday when they confessed that the stunt had been part of the celebrations of their friend's final days as a bachelor before his wedding.

Police didn't appreciate the joke and plan to punish the high-spirited chums.

"They will be given a strict reminder of the law to make them aware of the risks involved when being pursued by the police," said an officer.
