Paris residents can finally breathe a sigh of relief after news that a notoriously "gifted" burglar has been caught and jailed.

The man, who was dubbed the "Mozart of burglars", was arrested last week by police in the 3rd arrondissement after forensic teams were able to link him to two crime scenes.

This followed a string of robberies he is believed to have committed that reportedly kept police busy for months.

The 51-year-old burglar unlocked Parisians' doors with the help of a lock-picking gadget the size of a cigarette lighter and a stethoscope, the paper reported.

Thanks to his tool set, the man was able to let himself into homes without leaving even the tiniest hint to the naked eye that he had been inside - except, of course, for the missing treasures that he took with him.

In the end it was these treasures that truly spelled his demise, with police finding jewellery in his apartment, some of which belonged to French actress Fanny Ardant whose apartment had been robbed earlier in the year.

An accomplice to the man has also been arrested, the paper reported.
