A 40-year-old British man has been charged with "capturing and possessing images of child pornography" after taking a large number of photos of young women and girls at a nudist beach in southern France.

Police searched the man's holiday residence in Port-Leucate, where he had been staying for several days, after two young women reported his suspicious behaviour.

His mobile phone and computer contained dozens of photographs of naked women taken at the beach, the majority of them showing teenagers or children, local paper La Dépêche reported.

He could face up to five years in jail for taking child pornography, and also faces charges for invasion of privacy relating to the photographs he took of adult women.

The prosecutor, David Charmatz, said that the man did not come into contact with the young women he photographed.

The suspect was escorted to the UK border and is banned from returning to France. Charmatz said he would only be allowed to return to the country "at the request of the investigating judge".

Port-Leucate is part of the Leucate resort on France's southern coast, 30km north of Perpignan, which is also home to a naturist village.
