A new study of European travel bookings has revealed which travellers on the continent are most likely to be heading to France this year (and where exactly they'll be going).

Summer is here, and you'd be forgiven for thinking it was our neighbours to the north - the Brits - who'd be most likely to travel to France to enjoy it.

But that's not true, according to hotel-booking site Trivago.

The site revealed that, based on hotel bookings of seven nights or longer, it will actually be the Germans who visit the most, followed by the Italians.

In third place were the Brits, then the Belgians and the Swiss.

It will come as no surprise that the top travel destination in France will be Paris (which will also see huge crowds for the Euro 2016 tournament) followed by Rivieria delights of Nice and Cannes.

The island of Corsica performed particularly strongly, with three destinations in the top ten.

Here are the top ten destinations:

1. Paris
2. Nice
3. Cannes
4. Porto-Vecchio, Corsica
5. Marseille
6. Antibes
7. Saint-Tropez
8. Ajaccio, Corsica
9. Calvi, Corsica
10. Sainte-Maxime, in the Rivieria

Trivago noted that some 75 percent of summer hotels booked through its site were reserved within the first two weeks of August. Most travellers will arrive on a Saturday, it added, and will stay an average of nine to ten days.

The Swiss came in as the biggest spenders, coughing up an average of €207 per night for a standard double room hotel, followed by the Austrians at €205, the Danes at €198, the Swedes at €189, and the Brits at €181.

All statistics were based on bookings made for between June 1st and August 31st this year.
