Monaco heiress dies in Riviera 'mafia shooting'
The 77-year-old heiress from one of Monaco’s wealthiest families has died from her wounds after being gunned down outside a hospital in Nice earlier this month. Two of Italy's most notorious organized crime gangs are believed to be behind the killing.
Hélène Pastor, 77, said to be close to Monaco’s Royal family, and her chauffeur, named by the French press as Mohammed D, were left seriously injured after being shot outside the L’Archet Hospital in the southern French city on May 6th.
Reports in the French media on Wednesday said the heiress had succumbed to her wounds in hospital.
A report in the French daily Le Figaro said investigators suspected that two of Italy’s most notorious organized crime gangs, ‘Ndrangheta or the Camorra, could be behind the attack. Both clans are said to have gained a strong foothold on the French Riviera's property sector.
The pair were shot after visiting Pastor’s son, the head of a car firm, at the hospital.
Pastor, the sister of Michel Pastor, the former chairman of AS Monaco football club who died in February, was left with serious wounds to the face, neck, chest and abdomen.
The Pastor family has a huge portfolio of property and land as part of a dynasty established by her grandfather.
